Japan suffered a massive ATM withdrawal operation: 1,4 billion yen stolen

Japan police investigates activity of a criminal group against ATM machines around Japan. The criminals managed to cash around 1,4 billion Yen (around 12 million EUR) from 1400 ATM machines around the country.

The incident took place on May 15. A group of more than 100 people approached ATM machines in different cities (16 in Tokyo, according to report) and used forged credit cards to cash 100 000 yen each. The entire operation was performed within a period of 2,5 hours.

The cards used in this fraudulent operation were manufactured based on the data leaked after unnamed South Africa bank hack.

This is not the first attack of that magnitude. Back in 2012 carders stole $11 million from accounts of Visa cardholders using the similar scheme.

Yesterday FireEye reported, that they have detected several targeted attacks against banks in the Middle East. Seems like cybercriminals are into banks now.
