World’s largest cruise line operator Carnival Corporation discloses a ransomware attack

Carnival Corporation, the biggest cruise line operator in the world revealed it became a victim of a ransomware attack that hit one of the company’s brands over the past weekend.

According to a regulatory filing, the attack occurred on August 15, 2020. The company said it detected a ransomware attack due to which a portion of one brand’s information technology systems was encrypted. Carnival Corp also found that attackers downloaded certain of company’s data files.

Based on the preliminary assessment and on the information currently known, the company said the hackers gained access to personal data of guests and employees, “which may result in potential claims from guests, employees, shareholders, or regulatory agencies.” However, despite this, Carnival Corporation does not believe the incident will have a material impact on its business, operations or financial results.

“Although we believe that no other information technology systems of the other Company’s brands have been impacted by this incident based upon our investigation to date, there can be no assurance that other information technology systems of the other Company’s brands will not be adversely affected,” the company said.

Carnival Corp did not disclose additional information regarding the cyber attack.
