Mexico’s major lottery sites hit by Avaddon ransomware

A group of hackers behind the Avaddon ransomware operation has reportedly infiltrated the computer servers of the Mexico’s National Lottery (Lotenal) and has threatened to perform denial of service attacks if ransom is not paid.

Loteria Nacional is a government-run lottery system in Mexico operating under the Ministry of Finance.

In a message on their leak site the Avaddon operators claimed they have compromised the Pronosticos Deportivo website, stole data and encrypted the devices. They also threatened to release “valuable company documents” and to DDoS the website if negotiations did not begin within 240 hours.

To support their claims the gang published screenshots of what they claimed were documents stolen during the attack.

According to Bleeping Computer, following the ransomware attack the Lotería Nacional and Pronósticos sites have shut access to any IP address outside Mexico likely to prevent DDoS attacks by the Avaddon ransomware gang.
