Ubisoft says it suffered a cybersecurity incident that disrupted its services

Video game maker Ubisoft has confirmed it experienced a cybersecurity incident last week that temporarily disrupted some of its games, systems, and services.

“Last week, Ubisoft experienced a cyber security incident that caused temporary disruption to some of our games, systems, and services. Our IT teams are working with leading external experts to investigate the issue. As a precautionary measure we initiated a company-wide password reset. Also, we can confirm that all our games and services are functioning normally and that at this time there is no evidence any player personal information was accessed or exposed as a by-product of this incident,” the company said in a short statement on its website, without providing much details regarding the attack.

The announcement comes after multiple users reported issues accessing some Ubisoft services. The company has not disclosed who might have be responsible for the hack, but it appears that the data extortion group known as Lapsus$ may have been the culprit.

On Saturday, admins of what is believed to be Lapsus$' Telegram channel posted a link to The Verge’s report about the security incident at Ubisoft accompanied with a smirking emoji, suggesting that the group is behind the attack.

Lapsus$ has previously claimed responsibility for the data breaches at Nvidia and Samsung. Last week, the group asked their subscribers in a poll in their Telegram channel what data (allegedly stolen from Vodafone, Impresa, MercadoLibre, and MercadoPago) should they leak.

“Vodafone winner. We work to ready the data to leak,” the group wrote in a message posted on March 14.
