Open source developers are increasingly making their statements on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war through their projects.
Most recently, Viktor Mukhachev (aka Yaffle), the Russia-based developer behind the popular npm library 'event-source-polyfill' has updated the software to add an anti-war message that urges Russia to end “this pointless war and stop war criminal Putin,” and prompts Russian citizens to seek alternative sources of information.
Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has blocked access to multiple domestic and international news media outlets over the coverage of Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which the Russian authorities call a “special military operation.” The watchdog has ordered Russian media to only publish information provided by official sources.
“The people of Ukraine are universally mobilized and ready to defend their country from the enemy... 91% of Ukrainians fully support their President Volodymyr Zelensky and his response to the Russian attack,” the anti-war message reads. “The whole world condemned the unreasonable invasion and decided to enter unprecedented sanctions against Russia. With each new day, they will be felt more and more strongly among the civilians.”
The developer has also added a link to an anti-war Change.org petition that has already been signed by more than 1.2 million people.
Cybersecurity Help statement on the critical situation in Ukraine
On February 24, people in many cities and towns across Ukraine woke up to the sounds of explosions and artillery fire, as the Russian Federation launched a full-scale invasion of the country. Such actions are unacceptable, political ambitions of any man aren’t worth of blood, tears, and destruction of millions of lives. We give our full support to the Ukrainian people in these hard times. No more war! Слава Україні!
