Samsung says customer data stolen in a data breach

South Korean electronics giant Samsung has confirmed some customer information was stolen after malicious actors gained access to the systems of the company’s US division in late July 2022.

Samsung said in a security notice that the data theft came to light “on or around August 4” and that the company took steps to secure the impacted systems.

The company says that the incident did not affect Social Security numbers or credit and debit card numbers, “but in some cases, may have affected information such as name, contact and demographic information, date of birth, and product registration information.”

“The information affected for each relevant customer may vary. We are notifying customers to make them aware of this matter,” tech giant added.

Consumer devices were not affected in connection with this incident, the company said.

In March, Samsung revealed a security breach that exposed internal company data, including source code related to its Galaxy smartphones. The hack was carried out by the data extortion group known as Lapsus$ who then leaked 190GB of archives containing what they claimed at the time to be files stolen from Samsung's servers.
