Free decryptor released for LockerGoga ransomware victims

Romanian cybersecurity firm Bitdefender together with Europol, the NoMoreRansom Project, and the Swiss police released a free decryptor to help victims of the LockerGoga ransomware to recover their files.

The LockerGoga ransomware family first came to light in January 2019 after successful attacks against several companies in the US and Norway. Specifically, LockerGoga was linked to a ransomware attack on the Norway-based aluminum manufacturer Norsk Hydro in 2019, which crippled production across the company’s factories in two continents. The company suffered serious consequences from the hack, which is believed to have cost around $75 million to remediate.

The LockerGoga ransomware also impacted Altran Technologies, a French engineering consultancy, and US chemical manufacturing firms Hexion and Momentive.

The LockerGoga operator, who was arrested in October 2021 along with other 11 individuals linked to LockerGoga, MegaCortex and Dharma ransomware, is part of a larger cybercrime ring that used LockerGoga and MegaCortext ransomware to infect more than 1,800 victims in 71 countries causing an estimated damage of $104 million.
