Colombian energy company EPM targeted in BlackCat ransomware attack

Energy supplier Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM), one of Colombia’s largest public energy, water, and gas providers, was hit by a BlackCat (ALPHV) ransomware attack that disrupted the company’s operations and online services.

Due to the incident the company shut down its IT infrastructure, and nearly 4,000 employees were told to work from home. The company told local media that it is in the process of restoring the systems, and that the attack has not affected energy, water, and gas supply.

Colombian officials have confirmed that EPM has suffered a ransomware attack, but did not name the ransomware group responsible for the incident.

According to the tech news site BleepingComputer, the culprit behind the EPM ransomware incident appears to be the BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware group. At the time of writing, it’s not clear what amount of data was stolen from the company during the attack.
