Riot Games, the studio behind popular games like Valorant and League of Legends, fell victim to a social engineering attack that affected systems in its development environment.
The company did not reveal when or how the attack occurred, but said there is no evidence that player data or personal information was compromised in the security breach.
“Earlier this week, systems in our development environment were compromised via a social engineering attack. We don’t have all the answers right now, compromised in social but we wanted to communicate early and let you know there is no indication that player data or personal information was obtained,” Riot Games said in a post on Twitter.
The company has warned that due to the attack it likely won’t be able to release new content or game updates. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Update. On January 24, the company published an update confirming League of Legends source code was stolen during the intrusion. Riot Games said that the attackers demanded a $10 million ransom, which it doesn't intend to pay.
