A Christian Lebanese hacker group hacked flight information display screens at Beirut’s international airport to display politically motivated messages condemning the Iran-backed, Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah of dragging Lebanon into the war with Israel.
In a message to Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, the displayed text warned against pursuing a war that would allegedly jeopardize Lebanon's stability.
“Hassan Nasrallah, you will no longer have supporters if you curse Lebanon with a war for which you will bear responsibility and consequences,” the message read.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Lebanon and Israel, marked by recent drone attacks on Israel's northern border communities by Hezbollah.
Although the messages on the screens had logos from a hardline Christian group dubbed ‘Soldiers of God’, the group denied its involvement in the hack via a post on social media. Soldiers of God has gained attention in recent times for its campaigns against the LGBTQ+ community in Lebanon.
Another lesser-known group, 'The One Who Spoke,' claimed responsibility by sharing images of the hacked screens on its social media channels.
Lebanese authorities are investigating the cyber attack, and airport officials have assured the public that necessary measures are being taken to enhance cybersecurity.
In September 2023, Iranian hackers hijacked multiple Israeli websites and compromised private data. In another incident in December, hackers from Iran and Hezbollah stole data on IDF patients from the Ziv Medical Center. For their part, Israeli hacking groups attacked Iran’s oil infrastructure systems.
