Japanese space agency reports data leak due to a cyberattack

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been hit with several cyberattacks since last year, with hackers gaining access to the agency’s servers.

One of the security incidents occurred in October 2023, when intruders gained access to some of JAXA's business intranet servers. Following the breach, the agency took measures to contain the incident and initiated an investigation into the matter. The investigation determined that threat actors stole information related to JAXA’s joint business operations with external organizations and personal information.

The agency didn’t specify what personal information was leaked “due to our relationship with the other party” but said it informed affected individuals about the incident.

JAXA added that there has been no reports “of significant disruption to the business activities of the related parties” and that the breach has not impacted its business operations.

“Although there have been multiple instances of unauthorized access this year, we have confirmed that no information has been leaked as a result,” JAXA said. “We have confirmed that all of these incidents, including last year's incident, targeted VPN devices.”
