Pro-Russia hackers escalate cyberattacks on South Korea amid tensions over Russo-Ukraine war

Pro-Russia hacker groups have intensified cyberattacks on South Korean organizations after Seoul's recent decision to send observers to Ukraine in response to North Korea's deployment of troops to support Russia.

In a statement from the South Korean president’s office on Friday, officials reported a notable uptick in Russia-linked cyberattacks, mainly targeting civilian and government websites. According to the statement, some organizations experienced temporary delays and disconnections on their websites, but no severe damage has been reported.

The recent cyber attacks coincide with South Korea’s confirmation that thousands of North Korean soldiers have been deployed to Russian territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that nearly 11,000 North Korean troops are stationed near the Ukrainian border in Russia’s Kursk region. According to Zelensky, North Korean forces are now actively engaging Ukrainian troops, marking a new development in the conflict.

In other news, a DDoS attack disrupted credit card payments across Israel over the weekend, targeting HYP, one of the country's major financial clearing companies. Although HYP reported that it successfully mitigated the attack, consumers experienced downtime before services were fully restored.
