Romania’s major energy supplier Electrica reports cyberattack

Electrica Group, a major electricity supplier and distributor in Romania, has confirmed it is dealing with an active ransomware attack.

Electrica serves over 3.8 million users across Romania, providing electricity distribution and supply services in key regions, including Transilvania and Muntenia.

Electrica CEO Alexandru Aurelian Chirita said that the company’s critical systems, including its SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, remain unaffected.

“We want to emphasize that the Group's critical systems have not been affected, and any disruptions in interaction with our consumers are the result of protective measures for internal infrastructure. These measures are temporary and are designed to ensure the security of the entire system,” he said. “At this time, all specific response protocols have already been activated in accordance with internal procedures and current regulations. Our primary priority remains maintaining continuity in the distribution and supply of electricity, as well as protecting the managed personal data and the operational data of all entities within Electrica Group.”

While Electrica has not officially disclosed the nature of the attack, the Romanian Ministry of Energy confirmed it to be a ransomware incident. According to Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja, the company’s SCADA systems, which are vital for monitoring and controlling the energy distribution network, are fully operational and isolated from the attack.
