Ukrainian Tax Service Lost 3 TB of records to … let’s say an error

The Panama Papers made famous lots of people around the globe. However unpaid taxes and off-shore companies bothered only some people. In light of the greatest leak so far, State Fiscal Service of Ukraine a.k.a. Taxation Service reported loss of 3 TB (531,000 files) of internal documents and correspondence from external and internal parties.

The investigation report is dated April 1 (a well known April’s fools day). According to the report, IT and security departments completely ignored internal policies, did not perform backups and did not monitor state of server hardware. As a result, documents stored between December 06 and 11, 2015 were lost without possibility to recover.

The incident was reported on January 22, 2016. The official statement says that all lost documents were restored from paper originals.

Giving wide involvement of Ukrainian politicians in Panama Paper scandal, it is highly possible that not all documents were properly restored. In a while, we will be able to see results of internal investigation, launched by new government.
