Security Bulletin

This security bulletin contains information about 4 vulnerabilities.

1) Heap-based buffer overflow

EUVDB-ID: #VU33144

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 6.8 [AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2014-8139

CWE-ID: CWE-122 - Heap-based Buffer Overflow

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error in Heap-based buffer overflow in the CRC32 verification in Info-ZIP UnZip 6.0 and earlier. A remote attacker can use a crafted zip file in the -t command argument to the unzip command. to trigger heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

Mitigation

Update the affected packages:

i686:
    unzip-debuginfo-6.0-2.9.amzn1.i686
    unzip-6.0-2.9.amzn1.i686

src:
    unzip-6.0-2.9.amzn1.src

Q & A

Can this vulnerability be exploited remotely?

No. This vulnerability can be exploited locally. The attacker should have authentication credentials and successfully authenticate on the system.

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability.

2) Heap-based buffer overflow

EUVDB-ID: #VU33145

Risk: Medium

CVE-ID: CVE-2014-8140

CWE-ID: CWE-122 - Heap-based Buffer Overflow

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error in Heap-based buffer overflow in the test_compr_eb function in Info-ZIP UnZip 6.0 and earlier. A remote attacker can use a crafted zip file in the -t command argument to the unzip command. to trigger heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

CWE-ID: CWE-122 - Heap-based Buffer Overflow

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error in Heap-based buffer overflow in the getZip64Data function in Info-ZIP UnZip 6.0 and earlier. A remote attacker can use a crafted zip file in the -t command argument to the unzip command. to trigger heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

4) Out-of-bounds read

EUVDB-ID: #VU13613

Risk: Low

CVSSv3.1: 4.6 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2014-9636

CWE-ID: CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds read

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause DoS condition on the target system.
The weakness exists due to out-of-bounds read when handling malicious input. A remote attacker can supply extra field with an uncompressed size smaller than the compressed field size in a zip archive that advertises STORED method compression and cause the service to crash.
