Description
This security bulletin contains information about 7 vulnerabilities.
1) Input validation error (CVE-ID: CVE-2009-5147)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: 6.9 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to read and manipulate data.
DL::dlopen in Ruby 1.8, 1.9.0, 1.9.2, 1.9.3, 2.0.0 before patchlevel 648, and 2.1 before 2.1.8 opens libraries with tainted names.
2) Input validation error (CVE-ID: CVE-2015-1855)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: 8.2 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to manipulate data.
verify_certificate_identity in the OpenSSL extension in Ruby before 2.0.0 patchlevel 645, 2.1.x before 2.1.6, and 2.2.x before 2.2.2 does not properly validate hostnames, which allows remote attackers to spoof servers via vectors related to (1) multiple wildcards, (1) wildcards in IDNA names, (3) case sensitivity, and (4) non-ASCII characters.
3) Input validation error (CVE-ID: CVE-2015-7551)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: 8.6 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows context-dependent attackers to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.
The vulnerability exists due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted string, related to the DL module and the libffi library.
4) Command injection (CVE-ID: CVE-2015-9096)
CWE-ID: CWE-77 - Command injection
CVSSv4: 8.8 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the target system.
The weakness exists due to improper validation of user supplied input in the Net::SMTP function. A remote attacker can use CRLF sequences in a RCPT TO or MAIL FROM command and execute arbitrary SMTP commands on the system.
5) Input validation error (CVE-ID: CVE-2016-2337)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: 9.3 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code.
Type confusion exists in _cancel_eval Ruby's TclTkIp class method. Attacker passing different type of object than String as "retval" argument can cause arbitrary code execution. <a href="http://cwe.mitre.org/data/definitions/843.html">CWE-843: Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type ('Type Confusion')</a>
6) Buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2016-2339)
CWE-ID: CWE-119 - Memory corruption
CVSSv4: 9.3 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code.
An exploitable heap overflow vulnerability exists in the Fiddle::Function.new "initialize" function functionality of Ruby. In Fiddle::Function.new "initialize" heap buffer "arg_types" allocation is made based on args array length. Specially constructed object passed as element of args array can increase this array size after mentioned allocation and cause heap overflow.
7) Security restrictions bypass (CVE-ID: CVE-2016-7798)
CWE-ID: CWE-264 - Permissions, Privileges, and Access Controls
CVSSv4: 8.8 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions on the target system.
The weakness exists due to the openssl gem for Ruby uses the same initialization vector (IV) in GCM Mode (aes-*-gcm) when the IV is set before the key. A remote attacker can bypass the encryption protection mechanism and gain access to the system.
