Description

This security bulletin contains information about 4 secuirty vulnerabilities.

1) Privilege escalation (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-4943)

The vulnerability allows a local attacker to gain elevated privileges on the target system.

The weakness exists in VMware vCenter Server Appliance due to a flaw in the 'showlog' plugin. A local attacker can gain root level privileges over the appliance base OS.

2) Stored cross-site scripting (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-4940)

The disclosed vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient sanitization of user-supplied data. A remote attacker can trick the victim to follow a specially crafted link and execute arbitrary HTML and script code in user's browser in context of vulnerable website.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to steal potentially sensitive information, change appearance of the web page, perform phishing and drive-by-download attacks.

3) Type confusion (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-4941)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists in the remote management functionality due to improper handling of Virtual Network Computing (VNC) packets. A remote attacker can send a series of VNC packets, cause a type confusion and stack overwrite to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.

4) Heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-4933)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists in the remote management functionality due to improper handling of Virtual Network Computing (VNC) packets. A remote attacker can send a series of VNC packets, cause heap-based buffer overflow to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.
