1) Improper Certificate Validation

EUVDB-ID: #VU46730

Risk: Medium

CVSSv4.0: 4.6 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Green]

CVE-ID: CVE-2020-24661

CWE-ID: CWE-295 - Improper Certificate Validation

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to gain access to sensitive information.

GNOME Geary before 3.36.3 mishandles pinned TLS certificate verification for IMAP and SMTP services using invalid TLS certificates (e.g., self-signed certificates) when the client system is not configured to use a system-provided PKCS#11 store. This allows a meddler in the middle to present a different invalid certificate to intercept incoming and outgoing mail.

Mitigation

Install updates from vendor's repository.

Vulnerable software versions

Fedora: 31

geary: before 3.34.2-2.fc31
