Description

This security bulletin contains information about 2 vulnerabilities.

1) Use-after-free (CVE-ID: CVE-2025-31498)

CWE-ID: CWE-416 - Use After Free

CVSSv4: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:L/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Amber

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to compromise vulnerable system.

The vulnerability exists due to a use-after-free error within the read_answers() function. A remote attacker can send specially crafted ICMP UNREACHABLE packets to the application, trigger a use-after-free error and execute arbitrary code on the system.

2) Out-of-bounds read (CVE-ID: CVE-2024-25629)

CWE-ID: CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds read

CVSSv4: CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Clear

The vulnerability allows a local user to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error within the ares__read_line() function when parsing local configuration files, such as `/etc/resolv.conf`, `/etc/nsswitch.conf`, or `HOSTALIASES` file. A local user can insert a NULL character as the first character in a new line into one of the configuration files and crash the application.
