Description
This security bulletin contains information about 4 vulnerabilities.
1) Buffer Over-read (CVE-ID: CVE-2026-40385)
CWE-ID: CWE-126 - Buffer over-read
CVSSv4: 8.8 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service or disclose sensitive information.
The vulnerability exists due to buffer over-read in Nikon MakerNotes processing when decoding or displaying Exif data with MakerNotes on 32-bit systems. A remote attacker can supply specially crafted Exif data to cause a denial of service or disclose sensitive information.
Only 32-bit systems are affected.
2) Out-of-bounds read (CVE-ID: CVE-2026-40386)
CWE-ID: CWE-125 - Out-of-bounds read
CVSSv4: 8.8 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service.
The vulnerability exists due to out-of-bounds read in Olympus and Fuji MakerNotes decoders when parsing EXIF data. A remote attacker can supply specially crafted EXIF data to cause a denial of service.
3) Integer overflow (CVE-ID: N/A)
CWE-ID: CWE-190 - Integer overflow
CVSSv4: 9.2 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to read heap memory out of bounds.
The vulnerability exists due to an integer overflow in exif_data_load_data_entry() when parsing a crafted IFD entry in a large EXIF metadata buffer supplied directly to libexif. A remote attacker can provide a crafted metadata buffer with a large components value to read heap memory out of bounds.
The common JPEG-embedded EXIF extraction path is not affected.
4) Uncontrolled Recursion (CVE-ID: N/A)
CWE-ID: CWE-674 - Uncontrolled Recursion
CVSSv4: 8.7 [CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service.
The vulnerability exists due to uncontrolled recursion in exif_data_load_data_content() when parsing crafted EXIF data. A remote attacker can supply a specially crafted JPEG file to cause a denial of service.
The issue affects file, memory-buffer, and streaming EXIF loading interfaces.
