Description
This security bulletin contains information about 1 vulnerability.
1) NULL pointer dereference (CVE-ID: CVE-2026-68186)
CWE-ID: CWE-476 - NULL Pointer Dereference
CVSSv4: 5.7 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service.
The vulnerability exists due to a null pointer dereference in load_misc_binary() and begin_new_exec() when processing a binfmt_misc entry with the open-binary flag after an interpreter open fails with -ENOEXEC. A local user can register a crafted binfmt_misc entry and execute a matching native ELF binary to cause a denial of service.
Exploitation requires binfmt_misc to be mountable in a user namespace and relies on the interpreter being located on a FUSE mount whose server fails the open request with -ENOEXEC.
Remediation
Install update from vendor's website.
