The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service and prevent rejected credentials from being deleted.

The vulnerability exists due to an out-of-bounds write in the match_cred_password function of git-credential-wincred when processing an erase request containing a password field. A remote attacker can cause a victim to process an erase request containing a password field to cause a denial of service and prevent rejected credentials from being deleted.

Exploitation requires git-credential-wincred to be configured as a credential helper and a matching git credential to exist in Windows Credential Manager.
