Description
This security bulletin contains information about 1 vulnerability.
1) Integer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2026-98547)
CWE-ID: CWE-190 - Integer overflow
CVSSv4: 6.8 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service by exhausting CPU resources.
The vulnerability exists due to integer overflow in the Linux kernel's prb_calc_retire_blk_tmo() function when calculating the block retirement timeout for TPACKET_V3 packet rings. A local user can use CAP_NET_RAW privileges to configure a packet ring with a specially crafted block size, causing a negative timeout that makes the retirement timer repeatedly fire at the maximum rate and consume CPU resources.
The demonstrated trigger requires a 1 Gbps NIC; QEMU e1000 is a working example.
Remediation
