Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a local user to disclose sensitive information.

The vulnerability exists due to improper access control in the etcupdate conflict file handling in /var/db/etcupdate/conflicts when saving merge-conflict copies of protected system files during an update. A local user can read a world-readable temporary file to disclose sensitive information.

This is possible only when merge conflicts arise in files such as /etc/master.passwd during an update, and the temporary file is removed after the conflicts are resolved.
