Stack-based buffer overflow in Linux kernel - CVE-2026-74391
Published: August 15, 2026
Vulnerability details
The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service.
The vulnerability exists due to a stack-based buffer overflow in synthetic field helpers in kernel/trace/trace_events_hist.c when constructing synthetic variable names and generated histogram commands from long key lists, field names, or saved filters. A local user can supply crafted tracing inputs to cause a denial of service.
The issue occurs in tracing functionality while building fixed-size MAX_FILTER_STR_VAL staging buffers.
