Improper Check for Unusual or Exceptional Conditions in Linux kernel - CVE-2026-74362
Published: August 15, 2026
Vulnerability details
The vulnerability allows a local user to cause incorrect success status reporting for failed synchronous writes.
The vulnerability exists due to improper check for unusual or exceptional conditions in ext2_dio_write_iter() in fs/ext2/file.c when handling direct I/O writes to O_SYNC/O_DSYNC files. A local user can trigger a failed sync during a write operation to cause incorrect success status reporting for failed synchronous writes.
The issue affects error propagation from generic_write_sync() and may also involve filemap_write_and_wait_range() handling.
