Vulnerability identifier: #VU142963
CSH Severity: Low
CVSS v4: 8.5 [CVSS:4.0/AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
CVE-ID: CVE-2026-72470
CWE-ID: CWE-122
Exploitation vector: Local access
Exploit availability: No public exploit available

Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code.

The vulnerability exists due to a heap-based buffer overflow in the ntfs3 log replay scratch buffer handling in log_replay() and read_log_page() when mounting a dirty NTFS volume with an on-disk log page size larger than the initially allocated buffer. A local user can mount a specially crafted NTFS volume to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code.

Exploitation requires a dirty NTFS volume whose log records a larger page size than the mounting host initially allocated.
