Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a local privileged user to cause a denial of service.

The vulnerability exists due to an out-of-bounds read in nf_nat_register_fn in the netfilter nf_nat subsystem when handling netfilter netlink requests after nf_nat_init() has failed. A local privileged user can send a specially crafted netfilter request to cause a denial of service.

The issue can occur when nf_nat_core is built in and initialization has failed, leaving an invalid nat_net pointer state for dependent modules.
