Vulnerability identifier: #VU143069
CSH Severity: Medium
CVSS v4: 5.1 [CVSS:4.0/AV:P/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
CVE-ID: CVE-2026-72369
CWE-ID: CWE-190
Exploitation vector: Local access
Exploit availability: No public exploit available

Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows an attacker with physical access to cause a denial of service.

The vulnerability exists due to an integer overflow in minix_blocks_needed() in the Minix filesystem superblock handling when mounting a crafted Minix v3 filesystem image. An attacker with physical access can provide a crafted filesystem image with inode or zone counts near UINT_MAX to trigger a kernel panic.

The issue occurs because a zero bitmap block count can be accepted as valid, leading minix_fill_super() to dereference s_imap[0] or s_zmap[0] without allocated bitmap buffers.
