Out-of-bounds write in Linux kernel - CVE-2026-72196
Published: August 16, 2026
Vulnerability details
The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service.
The vulnerability exists due to an out-of-bounds write in log_replay() in the ntfs3 filesystem log replay code when mounting a malformed NTFS filesystem image. A local user can supply a crafted log record header with inconsistent lcns_follow values to cause a denial of service.
The issue is triggered on the mount path during the analysis pass.
