Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to create and populate directories outside the repository working tree.

The vulnerability exists due to improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory in the submodule update path in git/objects/submodule/base.py when processing a crafted .gitmodules path during a submodule update. A remote attacker can supply a crafted .gitmodules path to create and populate directories outside the repository working tree.

Exploitation requires application code to select a non-HEAD commit through a historical-commit submodule-update API.
