Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code.

The vulnerability exists due to an incomplete denylist in unsafe editor detection in the parseEnv environment parser when handling attacker-influenced environment variables passed to a child Git process. A remote attacker can supply a malicious VISUAL environment variable to execute arbitrary code.

Exploitation requires a Git operation that opens an editor, no higher-priority editor configuration, a TERM value other than dumb, and a runnable attacker-selected executable.
