Out-of-bounds write in Linux kernel - CVE-2026-98189

Published: October 7, 2026

Vulnerability identifier: #VU153823
CSH Severity: Medium
CVSS v4: 5.1 [CVSS:4.0/AV:P/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N]
CVE-ID: CVE-2026-98189
CWE-ID: CWE-787
Exploitation vector: Local access
Exploit availability: No public exploit available

Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows an attacker with physical access to corrupt neighboring kernel memory.

The vulnerability exists due to an out-of-bounds write in wilc_wlan_handle_isr_ext() in the wilc1000 wireless driver when processing receive transfers whose device-reported size exceeds the receive buffer capacity. An attacker with physical access can supply an oversized transfer containing controlled data through a bogus SDIO device to corrupt neighboring kernel memory.

The receive buffer is 96 KiB, while the device-reported transfer size can reach 131068 bytes. An oversized transfer can also leave the buffer offset beyond its end, allowing subsequent overflows to repeat.

Affected software

Linux kernel
Debian Linux
linux (Debian package)

How to mitigate CVE-2026-98189

Install security update from vendor's repository.

Linux kernel - update to 7.0 rc3
