CWE-ID: CWE-833
Exploitation vector: Local access

Vulnerability details

The vulnerability allows a local user to cause a denial of service by deadlocking host adapter resume and associated storage operations.

The vulnerability exists due to a circular wait in the Linux kernel libsas function smp_execute_task_sg() when issuing an SMP command during host adapter resume. A local user can trigger an affected resume sequence to cause a denial of service: pm_runtime_get_sync() waits for the ongoing resume to finish, while the resume waits in sas_drain_work() for the same SMP operation to complete.

The deadlock requires an expander-attached SATA disk.
