The exploit is only effective for authenticated sessions and the affected devices are End of Life (EOL) from 2012.
The officials said the hack is believed to be carried out in retaliation for Iranian attempt to target Israeli water infrastructure.
Data left behind in the attack suggests the involvement of a group known as Winnti, or something “closely related” to it, Taiwanese authorities said.

The attacks were carried out using compromised SSH credentials from universities in Canada, China, and Poland.
The group was preparing to launch ransomware attacks against public health institutions in Romania, where they intended to use “Locky” or “BadRabbit” ransomware strains.
The information stolen in the breach could have included sensitive data such as employee names, addresses, bank details, and payroll information.
The new malware is built from the same code base as the stealthy COMPFun remote access trojan.
Elexon said the attack only affected its internal IT systems and employee laptops.
