Description
This security bulletin contains information about 2 vulnerabilities.
1) Denial of service (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-8587)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:P/U:Green
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to cause DoS condition on the target system.
The weakness exists due to an error when Windows Explorer attempts to open a non-existent file. A remote attacker can create a specially crafted website containing the reference to the non-existing file, trick the victim into visiting it and cause the system to crash.
Successful exploitation of the vulnerability results in denial of service.
2) Remote code execution (CVE-ID: CVE-2017-8463)
CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation
CVSSv4: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N/E:U/U:Amber
The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.
The weakness exists due to improper handling of executable files and shares by Windows Explorer during rename operations. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted email containing both a folder and malware named with an executable extension, trick the victim into opening it and execute arbitrary code with privileges of the current user.
Successful exploitation of the vulnerability may result in system compromise.
