The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that they were the target of a cyberattack that, however, did not impact their operations or the safety of Canadians, CBC reported.
In a statement to reporters, an RCMP spokesperson emphasized that, despite the evolving nature of the situation, operational continuity remains unaffected, and there's no discernible threat to the well-being and security of Canadians. The RCMP has initiated an investigation into the incident to assess the full extent of the breach. Officials said there was no impact on foreign police and intelligence services.
Internally, RCMP Chief Security Officer Paul Brown addressed the staff via email, acknowledging the cyber event and advising heightened vigilance among employees.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) has been informed of the cyberattack and is actively engaging with the RCMP to obtain further details and determine appropriate courses of action, though specifics were not disclosed by the OPC spokesperson.
