This security bulletin contains information about 2 secuirty vulnerabilities.


1) Heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-ID: CVE-2014-9112)

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due to a boundary error in Heap-based buffer overflow in the process_copy_in function in GNU Cpio 2.11. A remote attacker can use a large block value in a cpio archive. to trigger heap-based buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may result in complete compromise of vulnerable system.


2) Input validation error (CVE-ID: CVE-2015-1197)

The vulnerability allows a remote non-authenticated attacker to manipulate data.

cpio 2.11, when using the --no-absolute-filenames option, allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a file in an archive. <a href="http://cwe.mitre.org/data/definitions/61.html">CWE-61: UNIX Symbolic Link (Symlink) Following</a>
