1) Improper Authorization

EUVDB-ID: #VU56273

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 4.6 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2021-34434

CWE-ID: CWE-285 - Improper Authorization

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to bypass authorization checks.

The vulnerability exists due to a subscriptions revoke flaw when using the dynamic security plugin. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted request and obtain subscriptions information.

Mitigation

Update mosquitto package to one of the following versions: 2.0.11-1+deb11u1, 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1.

Vulnerable software versions

Debian Linux: All versions

mosquitto (Debian package): before 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1

Q & A

Can this vulnerability be exploited remotely?

Yes. This vulnerability can be exploited by a remote non-authenticated attacker via the Internet.

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability.

2) Input validation error

EUVDB-ID: #VU58484

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 6.5 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2021-41039

CWE-ID: CWE-20 - Improper input validation

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input. A remote attacker can send specially crafted CONNECT packets containing lots of "user properties" and perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Mitigation

Update mosquitto package to one of the following versions: 2.0.11-1+deb11u1, 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1.

Vulnerable software versions

Debian Linux: All versions

mosquitto (Debian package): before 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1

Is there known malware, which exploits this vulnerability?

No. We are not aware of malware exploiting this vulnerability.

3) Resource exhaustion

EUVDB-ID: #VU79937

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 6.5 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2023-0809

CWE-ID: CWE-400 - Resource exhaustion

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

The vulnerability exists due to application does not properly control consumption of internal resources. A remote attacker can send malicious initial packets that are not CONNECT packets, trigger memory exhaustion and perform a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Mitigation

Update mosquitto package to one of the following versions: 2.0.11-1+deb11u1, 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1.

Vulnerable software versions

4) Memory leak

EUVDB-ID: #VU79936

Risk: Medium

CVSSv3.1: 5.7 [CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H/E:U/RL:O/RC:C]

CVE-ID: CVE-2023-28366

CWE-ID: CWE-401 - Missing release of memory after effective lifetime

Exploit availability: No

Description

The vulnerability allows a remote user to perform DoS attack on the target system.

The vulnerability exists due memory leak in broker. A remote client can send multiple QoS 2 messages with the same message ID, but then never respond to the PUBREC commands, which results in memory leak and denial of service condition.

Mitigation

Update mosquitto package to one of the following versions: 2.0.11-1+deb11u1, 2.0.11-1.2+deb12u1.

Vulnerable software versions
